Tom Anderton on patience, resilience, and 'getting on the ground' with your kids and your team.
Full Reflection
I plan to use the experience from this trip to be a little more understanding, both at home and at work. I've heard great stories about how patience, resilience, and continued hard work further the relationships at home. You have to really get in there — get on the ground with the kids, get on the ground, in theory, with employees — and really go that extra step: listen, do your own work at another time, and spend the time with people when you're actually in front of them.
Two people came to mind this year. One is a longtime finance friend going through a second set of children — having a fourteen and sixteen-year-old, and now a five-year-old and a one-year-old — someone who'd add a lot to a discussion on fatherhood, having been through it twice. The second is my partner in a new energy venture, with two young children I haven't gotten to spend much time with yet. I think he'd add a lot to the group, and it'd be good to get to know him on a deeper level.
